"Bee research at the Laboratory of Apiculture & Social Insects"

by Dr. Francis L. W. Ratnieks, Professor of Apiculture, Laboratory of Apiculture , University of Sheffield. The Laboratory of Apiculture & Social Insects is the largest bee and social insect research group in the country and investigates a wide range of topics in bee behaviour by doing research as far afield as South Africa, Thailand, Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

Saturday 3 July at 3.00 pm Mary Ogle has kindly invited us to hold this annual event in her garden. Tea will be provided but home made cakes or other suitable comestibles for such a celebrated occasion are essential !

Many interesting stalls and lots of live music which continues till 7.00 pm. Our North London Beekeepers stall is a big attraction. A good day out for all the family.

Apiary Demonstration Pyrethroid Resistant Mites!


Saturday 10 July at 2.30 pm:

Alan Byham. Our new bee disease officer, will give a live demonstration of testing for Resistant Mites when treating for Varroa. This is becoming a major problem for all beekeepers in the now looming event of pyrethroid resistant mites arriving in the London area. It is critical that beekeepers understand that very soon Apistan/Bayvarol will be ineffective.

Hampstead Heath open day!

Sunday 11 July 1.00 pm - 6.30 pm:-
Parliament Hill. North London Beekeepers stall. A great show for selling Honey and for recruiting new local members. Come and help and enjoy the rest of the festival. All members are encouraged to offer help at this event.

Last year North London BeeKeepers attended the Hampstead Heath open day for the first time. It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures around 28C, more info and pictures Here!

Varroa - Remove treatment strips. Assess colonies for Winter feeding. Wet supers to go above crown boards for cleaning by bees .

BeeKeepers Bash Celebration Pot Luck Dinner.

Last year our Honey Show and Celebration Pot Luck Dinner proved a great sucess with everyone there - so we are going to repeat the format. Moyra Davidson will again be our excellent Honey Judge. Bring your family to cheer if you win a prize and a bottle of your favourite beverages to drown your sorrows if you don’t. . It is a POT LUCK evening the food being made and supplied by you ! It all goes on the table and with a bit of luck there will be lots of choice. It can be hot or cold - there is an oven in the hall to keep things hot. Prizes for the Honey Show will be presented by Moyra at the dinner. Tickets are strictly limited to 40.

Competitors at our Honey Competition are strongly encouraged to enter their Honey at the National Honey show 21 - 23 October. Please note that entries and registration for the National Honey Show has to be made by at least by 21 September. Full details and tickets for the dinner will follow nearer the time. All exhibits to be at the hall by 4.30 pm. or given previously to Nicky Faith or John Hauxwell.

An interesting outing for all the family at this beautiful National Trust House and Garden. A celebration of apples in the working orchard. Apple tasting, jams and baked goods, apple juices to taste and buy, bee keeping demonstration, apple doctor, childrens activities, North London Beekeepers Honey stall.

National Honey Show

Thursday, Friday & Saturday 21st, 22nd, and 23rd November

An important event for all beekeepers. This years international show is right on our doorstep. New beekeepers in 2004 can apply for free entry - contact our secretary.

Choosing the Best Bee

Thursday 18 November at 8pm LECTURE - Terry Clare from Medway BeeKeepers and member of BIBBA much experienced in breeding bees and has handled almost every type of sub race of Apis Mellifera . His talk will be fascinating to us all who are interested in breeding a verroa resistant but honey gathering and docile bee. The perfect one - we can all dream !

By Margaret Thomas Who keeps 50 colonies of bees. Beekeeping is an significant part of her retirement and having the right stocks is most important. She will discuss some simple and some less simple ways of Queen rearing. Margaret was the terrific speaker at the Middlesex Federation bee day last year when she asked her audience many questions to keep them on their toes. !
